- If you are using a backup CD, a burned CD or a CD emulator program, then try instead using the original game disk.
- Make sure your system passes the system requirements.
- Check to ensure you have the required free hard disk space available on the drive you are installing the game to.
- Open My Computer
- Right click on the drive to which you will install the program
- Select Proporties to display the available free space
- If you have been having any Windows and/or hard drive problems you may want to run a thorough Scandisk and Defrag. It's good practice to run Scandisk and Defrag regularly to keep your system file managment at peak performance.
In order to run Scandisk:
- Click on Start, Programs, Accessories and then System Tools
- Click on the Scandisk icon
- Mark the Standard radio button for a weekly scan, or Thorough for a deep scan (which takes considerably longer).
- Make sure the Automatically Fix Errors box is marked.
- Select the hard disk you wish to scan and click Start.
In order to run Defrag:
- Click on Start, Programs, Accessories and then System Tools
- Click on the Defrag icon
- Select the Hard Disk you wish to defragment.
- Click OK to start the scan.
- Check to ensure you are running in 32 bit memory mode.
- Right click on the My Computer icon and select Properties.
- Select the Performance tab and make sure the File System and Virtual Memory are set to 32-bit
If running Windows 95 OSR2/98/98SE (not Windows 95 4.00.950 or 4.00.950a).
Go to step 6. Otherwise skip to step 7.
- You should choose to set the typical role of your PC to a network server to better handle the number of files being read/written to the hard disk.
- Right click on the My Computer icon and select Properties.
- Select the Performance tab, click on File System and set the typical role of this computer to Network Server.
- You should also attempt to modify the cache settings for the CD ROM to make sure it's running at optimal performance.
- Right click on the My Computer icon and select Properties.
- Select the Performance tab and click File System
- Then select the CD-ROM tab
- Set Supplemental cache size to full
- Set the Optimized Access Pattern to "Quad-speed or higher"
- Click "Ok"
- Make sure Windows is controling your virtual memory settings.
- Right click on the My Computer icon and select Properties.
- Select the Performance tab and click File System
- Click virtual memory
- Virtual memory should be set to "Let Windows manage my virtual memory settings. (Recommended)"
- The grayed out information under "hard disk" shows the free hard disk space. They should have over 200 Megs of free hard disk space.
- Click "Ok"
- Enable/Disable DMA and Sync Data Transfer.
- Right click on the My Computer icon and select Properties.
- Select device manager and double-click CD-ROM.
- Select your CD-ROM drive and click on Proporties.
- Click on the Settings tab.
- Try checking or unchecking both DMA and Sync data transfer.
- Click ok/close until the system properties Windows are all closed.
*Note: Some drives require DMA to be enabled. If your CD-ROM drive has problems after disabling DMA, then recheck the DMA option and reboot your computer.
- If problems continue: click Start and select Run, then type "msconfig" and push <Enter>.
- Select Startup and uncheck all the boxes
- Click "Ok"
- Click "Ok" again to reboot the computer
- After the computer reboots try reinstalling
*Note: If you do not have the msconfig program push the <alt>, <ctrl>, and <delete> keys at the same time to bring up the close program window. End task on all programs except for Explorer and systray, then try to install the game.
- If problems persist, then try running the game's setup.exe program from the hard disk.
In order to find out the size of the files to be copied to the hard disk:
- Open My Computer
- Right click on the CD-ROM drive
- Select Open
- Right click on the setup file and select properties
- Refer to step 3 to find out how much free hard disk space is available.
- Copy the install/setup file to the Desktop
- Double click the file on the Desktop to install
- If possable try using your CD in a different computer (or a different Diablo II CD in your computer) to help determine where the problem exists.
- Digital Audio Extraction software and/or DVD movie players can affect the normal operation of your CD-ROM drive. If you have either installed, you may wish to uninstall them. Be sure you have backups of these programs so you can reinstall them in the future.
