Review/Overview of American Cars of the 1960s (Haynes, 1977)

I picked this book up for quite abit more than I would normally have ever spent on a book of this nature – £12. OK not bank breaking, but considering that I normally pay less than £1 a book this was unusual. I actually visited this particular antiques and collectables shop a week prior and found this book along side some very fairly priced copies of AutoSport magazine (at £1/issue, more my level). But I couldn’t shake the thought of how interesting this book was to me. It just stood out.

An unusual size in that this book is extremely long, and not very tall – this 80 page delight contains a chronological list of every American car of the 1960s. What is nice is that although the book is an unusual shape, it is not so big that it becomes a nuisance to store – much like many art books are.

Working from 1960 through to 1969 the book features cars from a range of US marques including Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ford, Pontiac, Cadillac, AMC, Plymouth, Buick, Oldsmobile, Dodge and Lincoln – as well as smaller now forgotten marques such as Metropolitan and Rambler.

The book is set out very similar to a bird watchers guide – with nice clear photographs (mostly library style photos) with a number and letter designation. This code then matches a short paragraph about the vehicle – some longer than others. At this time of fast paced car development the book demonstrates and covers even small revisions between the years for models.

Although part of me wishes for the book to have more detail about some cars, I feel that I would probably dislike the book if it did so – as it would cause it to become the unruly size that I so detest to store.

One big negative point is the lack of any glossy colour photographs of the cars. At a time when most of these beautiful land yachts and muscle cars came with beautiful metallic paint jobs, they have all been confined to a very dull grey throughout the book. Likely a limitation imposed by the time of publication – also taking into account that Haynes are more known for their technical workshop guides which are black and white through-and-through.

A not-so-serious negative for this book is it makes me yearn to drive, or even ride, in some of these wonderful cars. However encountering an example in the UK is rare even for the more popular models featured in this book. Being the terrible car hipster that I am I want to ride in the lesser known automobiles on show; alas I can at least pine over them on various American car sales websites and portals with the ever lasting hope one will show up on Jay Leno’s Garage or Regular Car Reviews.

Web Badges from the 1990s and 2000s

One of the aesthetics of old web pages that I love the most are those teeny tiny badges (sometimes animated) that appear towards the bottom of the pages. Back in the days of 640×480 or 800×600 resolution CRT monitors these badges weren’t instantly visible until you reached the end of the badge. However these days, if you manage to stumble onto a relic of a webpage, the badges usually show up in full view thanks to 1080p monitor resolutions.

These little badges managed to perform a variety of simple tasks from advertising products you personally endorsed (like web browsers or chat applications), to forced sponsorship badges from your hosting provider, to badges indicating that your website (or webpage) used only the latest of web technology.

This post is a celebration of these tiny heroes, forgotten to time and dreadfully out of fashion.

In similar vein to the Web Badges post, this post will feature a gallery of those pesky ad banners, which in hindsight were probably less infuriating than some of the modern multimedia type adverts we have to endure today!

This page is a true assault on the eyes – so if you become hypnotised from watching all of these banners blink away simply close your browser window!

In all seriousness this page may take a while to load depending on how it grows, although most of these banners came from an era of dial up moden and slow DSL broadband and weigh in a measly ~20KB you may find they take a while to load in.

Also if you are using a browser based ad-blocker such as AdBlockPlus or uBlock Origin then you may find that some of the banners do not load / display. Simply temporarily disable the plug in and everything should show in all its glory (its ok you can turn the blocker back on after!).

Nicola’s B/Day Tape (5) – Home Taping Adventures

Here we go, the first ever adventure into home taping! In this series I delve into the mystery that is home recorded tapes – who knows what they may contain!

This tape appears to be a potential gift to someone called Nicola for their birthday, or maybe this is a tape that Nicola made for her own party? Either way the tape is filled with various music tracks that have been recorded from the radio – as the recording features plenty of ‘clipped’ dialogue and shaky FM reception!

OK, I can’t go to hard on this. The CD has a clear intention, to raise money for a breast cancer charity – so my critical tongue will have to rest.

Belle Canto are a musical duo comprising of Michelle Crozier and Kyla Lingley. On this CD of 11 tracks they sing various popular Opera hits such as Ave Maria and Quando M’en vo and some more ‘pop’ tracks such as You Raise Me Up (popularised by Irish boy-band Westlife). This isn’t really anything that I would say I am keen on, or even remotely interested – but in the interests of this project I have listened to a few tracks.

What you get are two very talented singers, accompanied by the typical karaoke 80s Casio demo track style backing tracks. A shame but keeping in mind that this was likely done on a very small budget, I’ll let it pass.

Using the wonders of the internet both Michelle and Kyla are still pursuing their respective musical careers, however they do not appear to be performing as the duo.

The release is nicely produced in that we have a properly pressed CD (courtesy of WeWow) in a full size jewel case. My release is signed with the comment To Roger, Best Wishes Michelle x Kyla xo which would likely indicate that the CD’s were distributed at some kind of live event. I think raising money for charity through the joy of music is a fantastic idea, and I wish there were more options out there to support it. The supported charity for this release is Breakthrough Breast Cancer (reg. charity number 1062636), who are still going but under a new brand name of Breast Cancer Now.
